Formerly known as Bechuanaland, a former British protectorate, Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa bordering South Africa to the south and south east, Namibia to the west and North, Zimbabwe to the North East.

After gaining her independence on 30th September 1966, the country has since been credited for its tranquility and is the longest running democracy in Africa headed by President Ian Khama. Botswana’s terrain is mostly flat and covered with semi-arid vegetation that stems from the Kalahari desert. The country’s climate is relatively hot with temperatures of up to 30 degrees in the summer and 25 degrees in the winter. Botswana recognises English and Tswana as the official languages and christianity is the predominant religious domain with up to 70% of the people either Anglican, Methodist, Lutheran,
Roman Catholic, Seventh-day Adventist ,Baptist, Mormon with a Moslem community of about 5.000.

The country’s currency is called the Pula which is Tswana for rain. Economically, Botswana has come a long way from being one of the most impoverished to the one of the world’s greatest success stories as cited by the world bank. The economy is mainly dependant on diamond mining, tourism, manufacturing and a steadily growing service sector.
